February 11th, 2008 Party of 5
Not only did I have a blast at [b]ecker’s Party of 5 workshop, but I learned a ton. I will be making some huge changes in the coming months to A Softer Image… including splitting it in two. There will be much more info soon, but I’m so excited about what’s next for us and our clients. I really think that the things I learned yesterday are going to make huge improvements in how ASI is run and what we continue to strive for.
We spent the whole day with Becker, from 11am to 8pmish. It was long, and there was so much information, everything went by so quickly. I’d highly recommend it to any photographer looking to have some intimate (not quite like that) time with a real upbeat pro who’s eager to share the knowledge that he’s accumulated. It was incredible to meet him, having followed his work and his blog for so long - and it was even more incredible to learn from him. He’s really a great teacher. Anyway, let me jump right into my favorite picture from the day:

Yep, that’s [b]ecker’s crotch. I particularly like the lens flare. Here’s the whole group, stolen from Becker’s blog:

(And yes, that’s a pretty serious new haircut I’m attempting to rock.) ANYWAY, there were four other photographers (one doesn’t have a website up yet):
Mark Barnes
Paula Cella
Orbie Pullen
Becker was kind enough to let us follow along at a real engagement portrait session for his real clients. He let us each first-shoot for a few minutes, taking turns at each different location. Here are a few of mine:

Aren’t they adorable? They were so kind to let us all photograph them! It was like having paparazzi:

Here is Orbie doing his thing (I really want to see how his turned out):

I shot a few from behind Becker while he was directing them:

The man:

And The Man:

Yeah, the cop pulled over to chat for a minute. No, no one got arrested. That would’ve made a good story, though, huh? Alright, here’s a little perspective into that it was like shooting with five other photographers:

And one last one of mine:

Anyway, it was a blast, and I’ve got a lot of catching-up to do now that I’m home and still digesting all of the information I learned. I’m so excited about what we’re going to be doing moving forward - much, much more to come!

Ooh, that last one is definitely my favorite! You nailed the skin tones and lighting.
