January 8th, 2008 Lindsey’s immersion in Davao
For three weeks around Christmas, Lindsey, an ASI photographer, had an immersion in Davao Oriental, Philippines as part of her United Methodist missionary experience. She stayed at a Catholic convent and took some amazing portraits that I’d like to share, along with her titles and captions.
“Man of the house”

Sisters Stella, Claudia, and Juama and Prince of Peace
“Maryanne”

Maryanne was my host sister. That’s a machete in her hand that she used to hack open coconuts for me to eat.
“Cabow”

And Gina, my host cousin.
“Cita and her charges”

Cita was even kinder to me than anyone else, constantly serving me extra snacks and fussing over me all the time.
“Gaga”

Gaga was pregnant when I was there and Maryanne told me they would name her kid Esai, after me. (Esai is the Filipino name most like Lindsey, which is difficult for people to say here.)
“Gaga, mother of Bob Kerr?”

The conundrum of course is what if the kid isn’t a ewe? “What’s your father’s name?” Maryanne asked. “Bob Kerr,” I said. “Well, if it’s a boy then we’ll name it Bobkerr.”
“Yes, Bobcur,” her father repeated, making the name one word.
I sincerely hope the kid is a boy.
