September 25th, 2007  Photo Blogs

Yesterday was a crafty day for me. I completed two awesome packaging products, which I’ll post pictures of after their recipients see them :) On Sunday Jen and I had a really nice wedding in Springfield, VA. Thus begins A Softer Image’s fall wedding crunch! Back to the grind, right? ;)

One thing I always encourage my clients to do is check out photos on the web to get a sense of what you’d like. Bring them back to your photographer to show him or her what you’re looking for, especially if there’s a specific shot you want. But where should you go? Lots just go to the Knot and other places like that, but I’d encourage you to branch out to photographer’s blogs as well. Some that I read regularly to get inspiration from include:

Apertura - These Southern California photographers will brighten your day. They took 2nd place in a recent WPJA contest for a cake cutting photo that makes me giggle. I like photographers who seem to only post images of poses you don’t see anywhere else. There are lots of “new standards” (like a bride holding her flowers in focus with the couple far away), and I have yet to see any make an appearance in their blog. Lots of their stuff makes me want to laugh out loud.

[b]ecker - There’s a lot you can say about this effervescent photographer. His blog is a mix of a lot of things - personal, documentary, wedding, portrait. It’s easy to enjoy his photos and get TONS of inspiration (especially from his post-processing work).

Danny Weiss - Great use of depth of field + emotion + post-processing. He really knows how to make a portrait work, and how to let an audience see what they’re supposed to in an image. There’s also a lot of good examples of engagement poses.

Janine Walker - Janine is a photographer in Northern Ireland who I stumbled upon while using Wordpress. Her work is sharp and saturated - she captures some amazing emotion and I really respect the way she works with natural light.

Regeti’s - This is a couple who I admire, and who also photograph in the Washington DC area. They capture some of the most graceful images I’ve ever seen. Lots of their photos are larger than life, and that’s why I love visiting their blog - it’s hard to display images in this medium, but they do it really well.
